Extension Activities

Carlee/Cassie---Drawing: To go along with the drawing theme students can also participate in an extension activity called Guess and Draw. The teacher will put different objects in a box and each day the students have to draw what they think the different object is. However the students will not be able to see the object, the teacher will describe it to them and then they can shake the box and listen to what is going on inside the box.

Brooke/Shannon---Painting: While learning about painting and the artist Kandinsky the students could also try to paint a picture of the famous artist or another artist of their choosing. They could use this painting as an introduction of their artist.

Courtney/Rachel---Printmaking: To go along with their Zoo and animal theme as a class you could play a game tag game where different people pretend to be different animals. The students can act and sound like a certain animal and tag the other animals at the Zoo.
Evan/Maggie---2D Paper: To go along with the fish theme of their project you could add an extension activity of a game called Jump over the Brook. In the activity students will use their bodies and jump from one rope to the other or from one side of the brook to the other. With this activity students will be ab
le to judge the space between the two objects, strengthen their legs, and use motor skills.

Katelyn/Sasha---Crafts: To go along with their weaving students could also make story quilts. The teacher could print out a quilt square for each of the students and together as a class they could come up with a story about their quilt. They could even briefly describe their weaving and why they chose the colors they did.
Jordan/Amber---Clay: To bounce off of their clay projects as teachers we could discuss how you could make or use clay at home as well. Together as a class we could make our own playdough to which the students could take home. They could also give their students the recipe so they can make their own at home as well or share it with a friend.
Emma/ Calli---3D Design: With learning about 3D design students could also learn some basic 3D shapes including a sphere, cylinder, cube, pyramid, and cone. The students could try drawing these shapes or even try creating them with toothpicks or q-tips and playdough or marshmallows.

Emma/Calli

For Callie and Emma's project I was home sick with Strep so I do not know exactly what they taught the rest of the class on. However I looked at all of the other figurines in the display case and the silhouette pictures that went along with the figurines. The theme of the display case was "Be unique" So I made my figurine unique, and I tried my best with my silhouette.
For my figurine I used a pipe cleaner for the body, and tinfoil to wrap around the pipe cleaner. For my dress I used tissue paper synched together with a pipe cleaner. For a little extra I added yard for the hair, a pipe cleaner for a ribbon and some pom-pom balls for extra effects.

Katelyn/ Sasha Weaving

This week Katelyn and Sasha talked to our class about weaving. We learned that you can pretty much weave anything such as rugs, blankets, and baskets. We also talked about patterns. In our projects we used an ABC pattern where we got to use three colors, we also talked about ABAB patterns where we could use two patterns.

In class we learned how to weave yarn into a cup. It was a fun but challenging experience. We got to learn how to cut our cup and then how to weave our yarn into our cup. We got to choose the three colors that we wanted. I chose a bright gree, a pail pink and a dark purple to create my ABC pattern.

Amber/ Jordan Clay

This week Amber and Jordan talked about using clay and making things out of clay. They told us about different things used in clay such as a kiln, and how to score clay. As a class we got together and learned how to kneed the clay and get it ready to create something. In class we used clay that can dry but sometimes people use clay that has to go into the kiln so they have to have it just right so they do not have air bubbles and their project does not break.

As a class we talked about texture and how different textures can be put into clay. We also talked about how they look and some different artists who use everyday things to make texture within their clay projects. It took me a while to figure out what I was going to put into my clay slab to make it have a textured look.In the end I chose a star pattern and put it into the clay, I wanted to add some more patterns but they did not look right with the clay. I also added red and blue ad made my project look purple.

Maggie/Evan Collage

Maggie and Evan started out their class by "reviewing" what we learned earlier in the week when we "read" the Rainbow Fish. While reading the Rainbow Fish we learned that he was unique because he had one sparkly fin. Along with learning about Rainbow Fish we also learned about the children's author Eric Carle. With Eric Carle uses a variety of different ways to make collages within his books.

So for our activity we got to make our own collages. First Evan and Maggie had us use cool colors of tissue paper like purple and blue to make out water scenes. They told us to cover the page and to make it look like their was texture. After we had our water scenes we got to add our fish but we had to make our fish unique like the Rainbow Fish in some way. After we added our fish we got to use green tissue paper to add seaweed to our prices. After that we had to write on our rubrics why our fish was unique, then some of us got up and shared about our fish and why it was unique.

Rachel/ Courtney Printmaking

Today in class Rachel and Courtney showed us two different photos one was from an artist named with the last name Gandai and the second was from Andy Warhol. They told us to see the similarities and differences between the two. We discovered that both artist used a variety of different colors but both continually used the same image over and over. Later they told us what printmaking was  and showed us a flyer they had made. They also told is that we would be picking an animal of our own to be making our own zoo flyer. In our poster we would have to use an alliteration ( where the first name and all the other words start with the same first letter) and we would also have to have a photo of our animal that we made through the printmaking.

After we picked an animal we had to draw it free hand the best we could, then we had to trace over our picture and transfer it to the styrofoam piece of paper. After we successfully transferred it from the paper to the styrofoam we had to cover the styrofoam with special printmaking paint, and then we had to carefully transfer it to a black piece of paper. After that we put it on a piece of construction paper with our alliteration about our animals.

Mine was of a turtle and it read "The Hub City Zoo invites you to witness Tommy The  Turtle and hisTerrific  and Talented Tricks!"

Watercolor Exploration with Artist Kandinsky-Brooke and Shannon

Shannon and I based out lesson off of third grade. We taught our students six watercolor techniques including: flat wash, graded wash, wet into wet, crayon resist, scriffito, and blotting. Along with learning about water color and their techniques we also learned about artist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was an influential Russian Painter and art theorist. He is credited with painting on of the first purely abstract words of art.

Music was very important to Kandinsky and his abstract paintings are a reflection of that. Most of his paintings are titled with musical terms. Kandinsky once said that “Color is the keyboard, they eyes are the harmonies, and the soul is the piano with many strings.” He believed he saw color when he heard music. Kandinsky was criticized because most of his artwork had no real subjects. Kandinsky insisted painting was like a piece of music its beauty came from the arrangement of its elements. Just like music gets its beauty from the arrangement of notes on a musical scale.

In our lesson we taught our students the six different techniques, then for practice we gave them each a piece of paper where they could listen to the music and start whatever painting they wanted. Then we stopped the music and the students had to change paintings. This went on for a while and we had a variety of different music playing as they used the different techniques to create their paintings. For our final project our students got to pick a technique or a variety of techniques to create their own watercolor paintings.
